about Thought Police

Introducing, from Cape Town, the new Original Rock Band 'Thought Police'

The story behind the name…

The name “Thought Police' AKA 'ThinkPol' is the secret police of Oceania in George Orwell's dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. It was the job of the Thought Police to uncover and punish thought crime and thought-criminals, using psychology and omnipresent surveillance. It had much to do with Orwell's own "power of facing unpleasant facts", as he called it, and his willingness to criticize prevailing ideas which brought him into conflict with others and their "smelly little orthodoxies". The term "Thought Police", by extension, has come to refer to real or perceived enforcement of ideological correctness, or preemptive policing where a person is apprehended in anticipation of the possibility that they may commit a crime, in any modern or historical contexts.

What we’re about…

We know that our music will be thought provoking and often take a view on life in general… or talk about life’s many challenges that we all face on a daily basis or have perhaps faced in the past. We may sometimes pass commentary on unpleasant truths we see in the world today, in the hope that our music will have a positive or even eye-opening effect on the views and actions that people may take in the future. Hey, we may even turn out to be somewhat daring and even controversial at times.

Then of course, there are those feel-good ballads and righteous Rock n’ Roll songs that we love to write and perform… you know… those songs that have you ‘flicking-your-BIC’ or ‘foot-stompin’ in the aisles! Really, we just put our material out there for you to interpret as you like, so take out of it what you will. Whatever happens, we know you’re going to love our music. Buckle up and enjoy the ride!

Our style of music…

It’s pretty hard to tie our music down to a single style of rock as the 4 of us have had too many musical influences over the years to mention, but I think Brett best described it recently when he referred to it as… “…Righteous Rock n Roll…”

We believe our music has a very broad appeal and across many age groups due to the broad range of influences we have all had. If we really had to compare ourselves for the sake of describing our music style, I suppose a blend of the following bands could give you a fair idea… U2, Counting Crows, Steve Miller Band, The Police, & The Rolling Stones…

Where it all started…

‘Thought Police’ itself was formed officially around March this year, but Brett and Sean have been jamming on and off together for over 16 years now, with many a failed attempt at establishing ‘THE’ band that was finally going to be ‘THE ONE’ that could take us on the journey we’ve been dreaming about all our lives. After a

rigorous recruitment drive and numerous ads placed with the usual suspects, such as Gumtree of course, we managed to find exactly what we’d been searching for… two awesomely talented musicians, but most importantly, two great and passionate guys that we had more in common with than we could have dreamt of. Very similar musical influences, strong personal values and the desire to change the world or at least make a difference! We all hit it off immediately and the music just started pouring out! It’s amazing how tight the band already is after such a short time in the rehearsal rooms. The response and feedback we got and are still getting from people of all ages based on our debut warm-up gig hosted by the Viper Lounge on the 21st August 2009 acts as a testament to this…
