about The Relay
The seeds of The Relay were originally planted in the winter of 1996 when Neil Kremer and Clint Hoffman began jamming classic rock numbers in a t-shirt warehouse just outside of Wilmington, DE. It was here that they honed their chops playing Rock and Roll standards from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Shunning the music of their own generation, they explored the roots of Rock music and slowly began crafting their own sound and writing original material. By the time that Richard Derke joined in the spring of 1998, the band, calling themselves Freeway, was already a well-oiled machine churning out originals and reworking classic songs by The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Clash, and Thin Lizzy. Despite regional success, the band disbanded in late 2000 with each of its members moving on to other bands.
Clint Hoffman went on to play drums with the locally popular What's Pink? which headlined shows at popular clubs in Philadelphia andWilmington. Richard Derke went on to play guitar with the trendy Delaware punk band Annie's Autograph. Neil Kremer went on the play lead guitar with the raucous cover band The Struggleos and the hard rock outfit Hung Like Horseflies. Despite the success each member enjoyed with other bands, the fans of the original members of Freeway yearned for them to reform. Upon their reunion, they were asked to play the final show at the renowned Barn Door's closing in Wilmington in the summer of 2004. They gladly accepted the gig and after the success of that show they decided to reform the band permanently. Borrowing their name from a lesser known Who song, The Relay returned to their roots for their new project.
The Relay immediately began playing shows in and around Delaware. Their high-energy stage show and bombastic sound was an instant hit with audiences and they soon had a loyal following. After playing out and practicing for 6 months, The Relay decided it was time to record. They were soon in the studio recording their unique brand of Rock n Soul music. They would eventually release the efforts of that recording in late 2005. The CD entitled We Have Our Moments sold well at shows and through the online distributor CDbaby. The CD sold so well that a second pressing was required in a matter of months. Since the release of We Have Our Moments, The Relay have been hard at work writing new material and honing their increasingly more sophisticated sound. Recently, The Relay have been expanding their market by playing gigs throughout the Mid-Atlantic region as well as gaining air-play on several major radio stations.
