about Sylent
Raised by a family of veteranos in old traditions and living by the words passed down that "only the true survive", Sylent grew up and lived his entire life in the city of Norwalk, Southern Cali a.k.a. "The Walk". Witnessing many homies get killed and become addicts and convicts, the streets gave birth to Sylent in the mid-'90's by turning him from innocent to guilty. Given his name by the homie "Ese Joker Loco", Sylent changed the spelling (from I to Y) as a way to show his name does not only mean someone who is "quiet". "Sylent" also means someone who: never rats, walks the walk and silences fools who talk shit by creeping up on them without making a sound (So don't ask Y???).
With years of writing reality-based poetry in high school, Sylent was encouraged to turn his poetry into raps by his homie "Sleepy". He was also influenced by the raps of his older brother "Payaso" a.k.a. "M.C. Clown" and by the D.J. mixing of his older brother "Cisco". He spent the next year turning his poetry into songs and practicing his lyrics and skills with his primo Mistah Scooby from Whittier, rapping on the porch going back and forth as the group "5-6-Two Deep". Even then, he never took it serious that he had enough talent for the game. With not enough confidence, rapping was almost the last thing on Sy's mind after discovering that his hyna was pregnant in late 1998. Giving up all "illegal activities" that he relied on for feria, Sylent decided to straighten up and do something legal. Not giving rap as a career no mind, it wasn't until his daughters birth in 1999 that he decided to take rapping serious after many unsuccessful attempts of trying to find an honest job even after graduating high school.
After watching many applications ripped up in front of him, Sylent managed to get a job as a truck helper for donation pick ups in 2001, where he earned money to buy some equipment. He purchased turntables, a mic and a CD-Recorder and began to record his own solo songs at home over recycled instrumentals that fit his songs the best. With help from L. Garcia, Middle Finger Recordz formed as an independent Low-Budget-But-Fuck-It label, still in it's early stages of demos and promotions, starting out from shit. Using his songs as a demo for promotional use, he released the full-length CD "562" under Middle Finger Recordz on Jan 1, 2002 in an attempt to get his name out to the public. With songs about his everyday life in the varrio, Sylent opened up to the mic for the first time ever. Voicing his silence, his songs detail his life in the crazy streets doing what must be done to survive the struggle in South East Los Angeles.
Being harrassed daily at work, he stopped giving a fuck and quit with the final words from his boss being "You will be no one heading nowhere fast". Planning to prove this bitch wrong, he continued to sell his demos at materials cost, give out copies and promote until he released his second full-length CD "The Walk" on May 5, 2002. By passing out many copies on Whittier Blvd weekly, Sylent is gaining recognition in the Chicano rap game with the most honest lyrics in the underground scene, holding nothing back.
His style is as real as it gets, giving all something to relate to with the favorite underground songs "Mr. Sylent"," I Hate It" & "South Side One Three" from the "562" CD and also "Get The Fuck On" & "Wife Beater" from "The Walk" CD. His demos were released in hopes for other Chicano rappers to give him the chance to rise with guest appearances to help stack enough money to buy the label more equipment to do what they love the most. Recognize the skills.
Feeling that it was time to give back to those who encouraged him, he went back and picked up old homies of his for his next project that was scheduled to be released by M.F.R. back in 2002, The 562 "S.E.L.A." Compilation. Sylent decided it was time to learn to produce so that M.F.R. didn't have to rely outside sources for their future projects. Taking the next few years off from the rap game, he promoted the new M.F.R. artists and introduced such artists as JuliO.G., Ese Joker Loco and DannyBoy. Throughout the next couple years, M.F.R. has gained and lost many artists, leaving Sylent the last man standing when the gunsmoke cleared. The 562 "S.E.L.A." Compilation and Ese Joker Loco Presents "The Prophecy" have been put on hold.
M.F.R. has gone through some major changes in the past five years. Although Sylent took a break from the game, he has finally returned. With plans to release M.F.R.'s first studio quality album early 2007, Sylent is currently hard at work recording his self-titled studio debut album. Early 2007... The Sylence Will Be Broken!!!
