My Uncle Ray
posted July 13th at 11:04pm
My Uncle, Rayford Burtz, who went by the stage name Ray Burke was a much admired guitarist who toured with Johnny Rivers (of Secret Agent Man fame) and headlined with his own band on the worldwide circuit of then popular Whisk-A-Go-Gos, in the sixties. On the rare occasions he was home, he would bring his guitar over and actually "jam" with me (an aspiring young keyboardist at the time). He encouraged me, not only to learn the popular music of the day, but also to pursue my dream of searching out my own sense of creativity and becomming a songwriter. Growing up in an atmosphere where art and artists were rarely understood, he, almost single-handedly, taught me that it was okay to love music, to play music, and to even be so bold as to attempt to create music. Gone from this existence a great many years now, I can still say, about him, with pride, "Uncle Ray, you were my first, my greatest, and still my best impression. You are, still, my hero."
