Hailing from the capitol of Florida, GIRLS ON FILM are an all-female 4-piece whose music is one part lipstick synth-pop and one part icy cold new wave.  Their fashion fueled combination of high-energy stage antics and Dancetronic Glam Wave - their signature sound - have earned the band a reputation as one of the hottest new wave acts out of the Southeast. 

With their first release in 2003, the Love Robot EP, surrounding buzz stirs attention for the band and leads to radio & internet play, TV appearances and an in-demand stream of bookings and interviews.  They play several prestigious music festivals in 2003-2004, including the Jacksonville International Connexion Music Festival, Cincinnati’s Midpoint Music Festival, and NYC’s M.E.A.N.Y. Fest.  The Girls find themselves sharing the stage with the likes of legendary London rockers The Fixx, west coast new-wavers Glass Candy, MC Chris, The Bangs, VHS or Beta, The Start, Rasputina, the Impotent Sea Snakes, and MTV’s Teck, among others. 

 

2005 sees the release of the full length album Danceteria, which goes into radio rotation on various international airwaves, including KTOO-FM (Juneau, AK), 2RDJ FM (Australia), CKUM Radio J 93.5 (Moncton, Canada), and numerous internet radio stations and pod casts.  Increased requests for the band to appear take off with the release of the CD.

 

An early 2006 tour to promote Danceteria takes the Girls to East Coast venues including Nashville, Baltimore, and New York City, where they headline at the famous Knitting Factory Tap Bar and shoot the video for the single “Vaporized” under the supervision of director Dino Reyes, currently being licensed for airplay on MTV Italia.    

 

After being tapped by Manhattan label 2Asides Records to lend tracks from Danceteria for expert remixes by international top remix artists and DJs (such as Steve Porter, Hatiras, Thomas Penton, and Neil Kolo), edits from the resulting project Remix Reel immediately begin charting on Release Promo Only.  The highly anticipated release of the Remix Reel double CD is originally scheduled for release in mid to late 2006, but numerous delays and financial issues keep the project indefinitely shelved.  However, several remixes can be heard in the documentary, Liquid Vinyl. As the Girls’ reputation grows, they continue to play a non-stop schedule of live shows from Charlotte to Atlanta to Miami.

 

Despite the band’s full performance schedule in ’06 and ’07, including the Tropical Heatwave Festival in Tampa, FL and Signalfest in Chapel Hill, NC, the Girls manage to write nearly an album’s worth of new material which is received by their audiences with enthusiastic demand for a second CD.  The Girls release the Get Close to Me EP in the Spring of 2008. Girls on Film continues to see its tracks get licensed for various film and TV projects including a commercial spot on the AMC TV Network promoting the movie, “Working Girl”.

Girls on Film release follow up to debut CD – Glam-Wave darlings, Girls on Film, spent a good part of 2007 in the studio working on the follow up to their 2005 debut album, Danceteria. This spring, the Girls are gearing up for a series of performances to promote the official release of their second studio recording, the Get Close to Me EP. The band worked with Mike Stephens of Stereomaster Studios to pump out this neon ear candy, the result of which is a little more raw and edgier than Danceteria, but still contains all the same elements that define their style. Since the release of their first full-length album, Florida’s Girls on Film have polished their signature sound, “Dancetronic Glam Wave,” the fashion-fueled combination of high-energy stage antics and synthpop beats that have made the band’s live show a must-see in the Southeast since their inception in 2002. The 5-song EP is chock full of memorable hooks and perfectly exhibits the band’s new-wave inspired sound that straddles the line between retro and postmodern. Song themes cover such topics as triangulated love, deceit, and sexual angst, but lead singer Rio’s carefully calculated lyrics are sharp shooting and sophisticated. The EP’s single, “Distressed”, features the driving rhythms, icy synth-wave hooks, and quirky vocals that Girls on Film have become known for. Overall, the Get Close to Me EP combines a rhythmic, sensual whiff of nostalgia with progressive ideas and is a surprisingly modern-sounding album that brings a rock-and-roll attitude back to dance music.
