What does it mean to be part of the energetic, spontaneous, high paced, rock/punk band, with a serious name like 'DonkeyPunk'? I had no idea so I asked the members and got this from the boys themselves.
It was from the ashes of several burnt out bands, whose futures were becoming increasingly uncertain that 'DonkeyPunk' was born.
Sam Polwart (lead vocals) and Richard Hurliman (guitar) got together with the vision of forming a band that would launch into the New Zealand scene with a powerful intensity. When their valiant efforts finding adequate members had finally paid off, they were surprised to see that they had found a reasonably good looking lot of guys who can actually play their stuff.
Hailing from the west with a west is best attitude came the down-right and dirty Logan Wedgwood (drums). Sam and wingman Richard saved Logan from a life of Nirvana style drumming and hurled him into the punk/rock scene where he has adjusted nicely with slight persuasion.
From the south came Al "Fingers" Grainger (bass), whose flat in the upper class suburb of Otahuhu has been claimed as DonkeyPunk's practice/recording space and base of operations. With a flair and style all his own, it was quite obvious that he was the talent in the band and the man we had to keep.
Peter Rowlands (lead) was found just around the corner. The youngest and most kick-ass guitar player they had met out of hundreds of auditionees (ok maybe 15 people), owning a van with the number plate "MANVAN" it was a little difficult to even consider turning him away.
Sam says being in DonkeyPunk has been a different but exciting experience which is reflected in their music, productivity and hard-work attitude. "Well lets face it, no one's going to give us a cent unless we've worked really hard for it, so we spent seven months writing and practicing before we even played our first gig. We didn't want to disappoint anyone, mainly ourselves."
Well from what I have heard of their music live at Al's house and of their plans, these guys are certainly dreaming big and have the plans in place to back up that dream. On stage they have an impressive performance, combining acrobatic visuals with music that is not only enjoyable from a musician's perspective, but has an infectious bounce quality that won't leave your head for days.
Something you should watch out for. If you enjoy rock music with a punk twist you're going to love these melodic fast-paced, fast-lived rockers who are DonkeyPunk.
