Overcoming Stage Fright for Musicians Part 2
Mind over matter is definitely true in the case of overcoming-or at least coping with- stage fright. Visualize a great performance with all members of your band playing confidently and well, with the audience appreciating every song and even sometimes singing along. Think of your upcoming performance as sharing a gift with friends, rather than being singing and playing before being scrutinized by Simon, Paula, Randy, and the world. Remember that audience members have showed up to see you, and they may have even shelled out some money and taken a road trip to hear your music?so your foot is in the door already.
Before you take the stage, remember that you?re well-practiced and that you?re headed out to share a gift with friends. Take deep breaths and utilize any other relaxation skills you find helpful. Finally, there?s nothing better than being in an audience during the show and being able to tell that the band is really enjoying the show, so avoid being robotic and going through the emotions of playing the notes and singing the words; instead, give a little bit of yourself during the performance, remember to smile and keep breathing, and enjoy the show.
